The social dilemma of self-driving cars

Recent research by Bonnefon, Shariff, and Rahwan discusses the social dilemma of self-driving cars. Cars can be programmed to prefer sacrificing the car and its driver if the other option is to cause harm to a higher number of people on the road. This will be good for society overall as it minimises the number of casualties. However the paradox is that people may not be willing to buy such cars that do not give higher priority to the safety of the drivers!
