Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley win the Nobel prize for economics

Image
Breaking news and massive boost for matching theory: Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley win the Nobel prize for economics for `for the theory of stable allocations and the practice of market design'. See The Guardian's coverage of the news.  This is also a good time to honour the contributions of David Gale ----the late colleague of Shapley who also made fundamental contributions to the growing work on matching markets.                                                                 Some of the influential publications which have helped Lloyd Shapley and Alvin Roth achieve the prize are not restricted to but at least include the following ones: Gale, D., L. S. Shapley (1962). College Admissions and the Stability of Marriage. American Mathematical Monthly 69 9-15: The paper which formalized the famous Deferred Accept...

Kidney exchange

In a recent talk, Al Roth discusses graph theoretic approaches to solve the life-and-death problem of kidney exchange. The talk is quite long but gives a detailed overview of the kind of research problems which emerge in the domain of kidney exchange.

Two birds with one stone

The World Congress on Game Theory which was held in July this year was an opportunity to attend a number of great talks. Three of the talks had an interesting similarity. In each of these talks, the speaker examined a two-sided matching problem and presented a single mechanism which encapsulates two previously introduced well-known mechanisms. Generalized Matching for School Choice Atila Abdulkadirogolu The school choice problem can be formulated as two-sided matching problem with one-sided preferences (if school only have priorities over students but not preferences) or 2-sided matching problem with two-sided preferences (schools are also strategic agents with preferences over students). Abdulkadirogolu introduces a more general hybrid model which covers both the settings. His Stable Transfer Cycles (STC) algorithm for the hybrid model reduces to the Top Trading Cycles ( TTC) algorithm in the case of one-sided preferences and Student Optimal Stable Matching (S...

The Economist's quotations on Economics

The Economist's A-Z of business quotations featured quotations on economics.   The quotations include the following. "Mathematics brought rigor to Economics. Unfortunately, it also brought mortis." Kenneth Boulding, economist (1910–93) "The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design." Friedrich Hayek, economist (1899–1992), The Fatal Conceit: The Errors of Socialism (1988) "Give me a one-handed economist. All my economists say, on the one hand … on the other …" Harry S. Truman, American president (1884–1972) "If economists could manage to get themselves thought of as humble, competent people on a level with dentists, that would be splendid." John Maynard Keynes, “The Future”, Essays in Persuasion (1931) "Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influences, are usually the slaves of some defun...
